Your Questions Matter
FAQ's to help you know what is going to happen at Yorktown Methodist Church.
Check out the Q&A's below. Each one will have a brief answer as well as a more detailed response to hopefully help you get exactly what you need if the time comes that you would like to be our guest.
Do I have to believe in God or Jesus to come?
No. Some people believe in Jesus and God before they come to church. Others are exploring what they believe. You are welcome either way.
In some churches only certain people can do things, does that happen here?
No. You don’t have to be a member of our church or denomination to take Communion, receive prayer, or participate in the ministries of our church.
What time should I arrive?
Service begins promptly at 9:30. Most people arrive between 9:15 and 9:30. We recommend finding a seat by 9:25 so that you don’t feel rushed and can enjoy the musical prelude.
How long does everything last?
Our service generally lasts right at one hour.
Where should I sit?
There are no assigned seats! Unless you are worshiping with children and need to be near the children's space, you are free to sit wherever you would like.
Where do I park?
The south side of the building' you can access our parking lot from South Broadway, South Walnut, or West Arch Street.
Where do I go?
You will have direct access to the sanctuary by entering through the double doors on the front portico. If you would like to visit the office, enter through the door labeled “Chapel & Office,” easily accessible from the parking lot.
What will people be wearing
No one at YUMC gets very fancy on Sunday mornings, though some people like to dress up a little. Women may wear dress pants and a blouse, or a casual dress. Men might wear khakis or slacks with a collared shirt. On holidays, you might even see the occasional dress shirt, tie, and jacket. Others, however, prefer to dress casually and comfortably. Many people wear jeans, t-shirts, or athletic wear. Dress in whatever way you feel most comfortable.
Are people who know me going to be upset if I don’t return?
Absolutely not. We know that this church can't be everything to everyone and that we each are looking for specific things in finding the right faith community.
What will my child do?
We have nursery care available for children 0-3 years of age. Our nursery is located on the lower level, which you can easily access from the front doors. One of our greeters would be happy to show you the way!
If your child is over three, or you prefer to keep your kiddo close, we provide a children’s space in the sanctuary with quiet activities. We ask that one adult stays near the child, but don’t feel you need to micromanage behavior. Little people make noise, and that’s okay! We’re thrilled to have them with us.
Who watches the children?
Our nursery is staffed by trained volunteers who undergo child protection training and screening.
Is there Sunday School?
Yes. There is an adult Sunday School class that meets at 10:45a after worship in the TFL room on the lower level.
What will we do during church?
Our worship service is fairly similar from week to week. You can expect to be greeted by the pastor, sing some songs, recite a psalm with the rest of the congregation, hear a sermon, and pray. Our worship leader guides the congregation to sit or stand, and all the words we say as a congregation (such as the Lord’s prayer or the psalm reading), are projected on the screen. We make it easy to follow along!
What kind of music is there?
Our music is mostly traditional. We sing with piano accompaniment, and occasionally incorporate percussion or other musical instruments. The song choices are a blend of traditional hymns, praise chorus, and modern worship songs. Each week we have at least one modern song.
Am I supposed to pay or give money?
The short answer is, “NO.” There is no financial expectation at worship.
The longer answer is, “It depends.” We believe tithing is one way we trust God with our money, and honor Jesus. We give money to support the ministries of the church, which include charitable assistance in the community. Helping the poor IS a Christian duty, and that’s only possible because of donations to the church. And churches require money to pay our bills, therefore we are grateful for every gift, of any size. However, giving is only an expectation for people who have made YUMC their church home. We do not expect or seek financial contributions from visitors.
