What Does the Bible Say about Hearing from God?

by Ella Reff

World-renowned evangelist Billy Graham in his book Nearing Home writes: "If we are communicating with the Lord Jesus through prayer and meditating on His Word, our spirits will identify with His voice. Jesus said, 'My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me' (John 10:27)."

Graham also proposes that "Not only does He want to communicate with us, He also wants to hear from us. He expects a response." We are reminded that Isaiah heard God asking, "Whom shall I send?" with him responding, "Send me." We also learn that on the road to Damascus, Paul asked God, "What do you want me to do?" (pp.74-77)

I was told that God's phone number is Jeremiah 33:3, which says "Call upon me, and I will answer." Remember that a phone call is a two-way conversation and that we need to stop and listen as well as speak.

As we pray to make decisions about our careers, our health, our finances, and our daily steps, we can hope and believe that we have heard that same still, small voice that Elijah heard.
