Dear Susanna,

We have several Christmas traditions at our church that I am worried some of our new people won't know about. Could you give them a quick summary of what is going on so they won't miss out?

Caring Carol

Dear Caring,

That's a wonderful idea. YMC has several special events that we want everyone to know about.

  • Nov 26 - Hanging of the Greens - Meet at the church at 5:00 and help decorate for the holidays followed by Pizza King.
  • Nov 27 - Advent Calendar - Follow along via print copy, on Facebook, or at YorktownChurch.org.
  • Dec 3 - Poinsettias orders due - We also decorate the church with poinsettias. Some members purchase them and designate in honor of or in memory of loved ones. People who sign up for one pay by designating on an offering envelope. The donors often take home their poinsettias after the Christmas Eve evening service.
  • Dec 3 - Christmas Tea - Many of the ladies of the church gather from 2:00 - 4:00 for an afternoon of Christmas carols, cookies, and tea.
  • Christmas Baskets are a big deal at YMC. Each year we pack up a number of boxes and share them with families in need. The big packing day is Dec 9 at 8:00 a.m. The Boy Scouts treat us to a great breakfast. The next Saturday, some folks gather at the church for breakfast again and to top the baskets off with some fresh produce, milk, eggs, and ham. Then they distribute the baskets to the families on the list.
  • Staff gifts - Many of the members of the congregation choose to designate a gift that will be distributed among all the paid staff members. Those gifts need to be turned in on/by Dec 19.
  • Dec 24 - Christmas Eve Service at 7:00 pm - We always have a delightful time worshiping together and celebrating the arrival of the Christ Child.

Love & Prayers,

Susanna
