Our Beliefs at Yorktown Methodist Church

We are an independent non-denominational congregation with roots in the Wesleyan/Methodist movement of the 18th century. Visit https://www.ccel.org/ccel/schaff/creeds3.v.vi.html to see a list of the foundational beliefs of our congregation. These beliefs are based upon the Articles of Religion of the Methodist Episcopal Church which were first enacted in 1784.. We affirm the beliefs of the Christian faith as stated in the Apostle’s Creed and Nicene Creed.

We believe in the one God, Creator and Sustainer of all things, infinite in love, perfect in judgments and unchanging in mercy. God exists eternally in three persons, Father, Son and Holy Spirit.
We believe that Jesus Christ is God’s Son incarnate, born of the Virgin Mary. He died for the sins of all. Though dead, Jesus was raised to a full, bodily resurrection, after which he revealed himself to the disciples and many others. Forty days later, He ascended to the right hand of the Father where He intercedes for us. We believe Christ will return in final victory, will resurrect the dead in Christ, and establish God’s perfect reign on earth, as it is in heaven.
We believe that the Holy Spirit is God present and active in the world. The Holy Spirit was given to the church at Pentecost and the Spirit continues to dwell within believers of every age. By the Spirit, Christ lives in His church, the gospel is proclaimed, and the kingdom of God is manifested in the world.
We believe the Holy Bible, including both the Old and New Testaments, is the divinely inspired authority for all things necessary for salvation. It is to be received through the Holy Spirit as the true rule and guide for faith, practice, and service.
We believe that human beings were created in the image of God. This image was marred in every part through disobedience and sin. our relationship with God was broken as a result. However, God offers grace which restores moral sensibility to all humankind and enables all to respond to God’s love and to accept God’s saving grace through Jesus Christ.
We believe that God, out of love for humanity, offers grace to all. First, God extends prevenient grace, which is a grace that comes before we ever choose God. Prevenient grace enables sinful people to respond to God’s gracious invitation. When human beings repent of their sin and put their trust in the work of Jesus to save them, they experience justifying grace. Thereby, believers receive forgiveness for sin and their broken relationship with God is made right. As believers walk with God in faith, they receive sanctifying grace, and are transformed into the likeness of Christ. That doesn’t mean Christians become faultless, or ever move become the temptation of sin, but the Holy Spirit makes it possible for believers to live with whole-hearted love for God and others.
We believe that the Church is the people of God composed of all those who believe in Jesus Christ as Savior and Lord. The Church is Christ’s body and can be seen in the world wherever believers hear the word, receive the sacraments, and live as disciples. We believe God calls all Christians to be formed in communal life, through participation in a local church. The church is the avenue through which the Holy Spirit transforms hearts, minds, and lives. We believe the Spirit gifts every believer with spiritual gifts to serve the mission of God and the body of Christ. We do not believe God gifts men and women differently, and we affirm the roles of women and men in all forms of Christian leadership. We celebrate God’s gift of diversity shared by all persons in Christian community. We welcome people of every age, gender, race, ethnicity, and so much more.
We observe two sacraments: Baptism and Holy Communion. We practice infant and adult baptism. We affirm baptisms from Christian denominations and other Christian faith traditions. We believe in an “open communion table,” which means all are invited to participate, regardless of membership or church affiliation.

A church is more of a family than a building.

We are a group of people who share some ideas and beliefs about God and Jesus that have drawn us together. More than that though: We laugh and celebrate with each other. We care for one another in hard times. We find ways to serve our community. And, we are trying our best to learn how to be a reflection of Jesus' love to everyone we meet.
