O little town of Bethlehem,
How still we see thee lie!
Above thy deep and dreamless sleep
The silent stars go by.
Yet in thy dark streets shineth The everlasting Light; The hopes and fears of all the years Are met in thee tonight.
Read: Micah 5:1-4
The theme of this verse is two-fold. For one, the people of Bethlehem did not understand what happened that night. Even though the scriptures had foretold that the Messiah (Jesus) would come from this town, they were unaware at what had happened. They were “in the dark” literally, as it was night, and figuratively. Secondly, during their darkness, the “Everlasting Light” came into the world that night.
