While mortals sleep the Angels keep Their watch of wondering love.
Read: Psalm 103:19-22
The angels are a mystery. The Old Testament and New Testament name two (Michael and Gabriel). In the book of Revelations, we find reference to seven (7):
And I saw the seven angels who stand before God, and seven trumpets were given to them. (Revelations 8:2, NIV)
These seven, the Church have given the title of Archangels.
The Bible does not limit the number of heavenly beings to these seven. The Bible speaks of the Seraphim and the Cherubim who also have unique roles as they attend to God.
Among their roles, the angels were tasked with being God’s messengers. In the Christmas story we see the angel, Gabriel, taking God’s message of Jesus’ birth to both Mary and Joseph. It is the angels (and other heavenly beings) who make up the heavenly choir that announce the heavenly birth to shepherds.
During this Advent season, are you listening for the message that God’s messengers may be speaking?
Are you open to what God may have in store for this Advent season?
