YMC Men

For Men Only

by Ron Sloan

Big picture

There are some biblical passages directed only to men. This is knowable because they specifically address men, and also because complementary passages are specifically addressed to women either just before or after these men-focused passages. For example, in 1 Peter 3:7, we are told to be considerate and respectful toward our wives. Otherwise, our prayers will be hindered. Titus 2:2 says that older men, such as myself, need to be temperate, worthy of respect, self-controlled, and sound in faith, in love and in endurance. Whew, a tall order!

The most daunting task, though, is found in Ephesians 5:25, where we are commanded to love our wives sacrificially, just as Jesus loves the church. If that weren’t enough, Ephesians 6:4 also says we—not the pastor or youth director—are responsible for our children’s spiritual training. Maybe you are able to handle all this easily on your own. If you are like me, you could use all the help you can get.

Several Yorktown Methodist guys get together every Thursday morning at 8:00 a.m. via Zoom. We study the pastor’s selected Biblical text from the previous Sunday, but of course, with a male perspective. We have found that by limiting our time to 30 minutes we are adequately fortified by the sword of the Spirit (the Word of God) to meet the day’s challenges and opportunities in a manner described by 1 Peter, Titus, and Ephesians. The monthly Tuesday morning group of men meeting for breakfast is growing. Make plans to join them on the second Tuesday of the month at 8:30 a.m. at Osborn's.
